Satisfy Your Soul

Bruce Demarest

Satisfy Your Soul: Restoring the Heart of Christian SpiritualityThe first time I picked up Satisfy Your Soul to read it, I was afraid. It turns out that the thing I was afraid of was allowing God into my heart of heart. Bruce Demarest, a solid evangelical, clearly and persuasive speaks on restoring the heart of Christian Spirituality. The road to the future leads through the past. Bruce leads us to explore the history of the Church through the ages to tap into the wisdom of God manifested through time. If your attitude towards God is growing cold or your experience of God is more knowledge of facts than of a person, then this book will knock your socks off.

Systematic Theology

Wayne Grudem

Systematic TheologyI picked up this book when I was a student at Penn State. Even though it is a thousand pages, by far it is my most favorite book. I’ve read it twice and encourage all my guys to pick up a copy to read it thoroughly. Systematic Theology answers the question, “what does the Bible teach about ____?” Wayne gathers the key passages that teach on each topic and present the issues in question on each topic with clear, balanced, and respectful responses. Each chapter can stand alone, so this makes an excellent reference, but I do encourage you to read it cover to cover. Personally, Wayne Grudem is a humble man who has a heart for God and is easy to understand and respect.

The Pleasures of God

John Piper

The Pleasures of God : Meditations on God\'s Delight in Being GodThe best cure for self-centered spirituality is a good dose of John Piper’s teaching on the pleasure of God in all He does. In a dry period of my life, Piper helped me take the attention off myself and refocused my gaze on the great glory of God and His Name. He’s chosen us, He will sustain us, and He will glorify us in the end. Savor this sweet teaching on God’s divine pleasures and let it change you from the inside out as you meditate on the greatness of His glory.

Streams of Living Water

Richard Foster

Streams of Living Water: Celebrating the Great Traditions of Christian Faith

What ever happened to Christianity over the last 2,000 years? Sometimes, we think that the progress of Christianity began at the Reformation. Or worse, we feel that Church history isn’t important at all today (the ahistorical attitude). Foster challenges us to look at how Christ lived during his 30 years on earth and then how Christians have lived with Christ in them throughout the last two millenia, because a balanced Christianity comes from allowing Christ into all of your life. Foster examines six major traditions of the church and how they are really all part of one life in union with Christ.

The six traditions are:

  • The Contemplative Tradition: the prayer-filled life
  • The Holiness Tradition: the virtuous life
  • The Evangelical Tradition: the Word-centered life
  • The Social Justice Tradition: the compassionate life
  • The Incarnational Tradition: the sacramental life
  • The Charismatic Tradition: the Spirit-empowered life

The Spirit of the Disciplines

Dallas Willard

The Spirit of the Disciplines - Reissue : Understanding How God Changes LivesWow! I just finished reading this book and this was a good one. It got a little slow in the middle, but the content was great. The premise of the book is that much of what we call Christianity today toys at the true spiritual life. For instance salvation equals forgiveness of sins, discipleship is kind of optional, and the spiritual disciplines are for the really good Christians. Dallas Willard clearly, biblically, and cultural shows what the Christian life really is so that we can not just aspire to be like Jesus, but walk the way that Jesus walked. Ultimately we need spiritual training in order to participate in the new life of Christ. I would definitely pick up a copy of this book.
