Lockdown
On Lost on Wednesday, Locke was stuck in the hatch and the blast doors came down. Who know what that’s all about, but there was an interesting image on one of them. If you want another look, here it is.

Rails 1.1
Rails, the web application framework we all love so much, is now on to version 1.1.
So, What’s new in Rails 1.1? Scott Raymond wrote an incredible article outlining the new features/changes.
Also, the up-and-coming Rails Recipes (well, actually it’s already released as a beta book on pdf) has a number of recipes that use Rails 1.1. I would say that I’ve read this entire book, but that means beta version 1. Since then Chad Fowler has released a ton of new chapters.

This is a must-buy for the newby railer, which is half of the rails audience. You can order the beta book from the Pragamtic Programmers. I need to buy stock in their company, because I like their books so much.

It’s true. We launched CruCommons.com. After much hard work and long hours, this site, linking thousands of college students together, is underway. In the first 48 hours, 750 people already added their picture to the community. I’ve never seen a site grow so fast.
Perhaps the sucess of the site is linked to the way we adapted our database to make it happen. The site is prepopulated from the thousands of people who already registered for summer projects and conferences. Then, it just took a little bit of marketing to tell people about the site and get them involved. Having a prepopulated site does a ton of good in making a site grow fast. It becomes epidemic.
Andy Fish, my director, wrote about the site too.

Waiting for James to be born is so exciting and scary. We have no idea what he will look like. We don’t know anything about him, but he is so close to us. Oh, the joys and anxieties of pre-fatherhood.

It’s surreal that in 19 days (give or take…but hopefully take…whichever means earlier!) all of our planning and talking and wondering will come to fulfillment. “What will he look like?” “Which outfit should I dress him in? (we have so many to choose from!) “Will Pippin like the baby?” And on and on it goes.
Luckily I feel like I’ve had plenty of time to prepare and rest. The nursery is just waiting on a baby…and so are we! This weekend we’re going out to some fun places together. An art museum, a french restaurant that has live jazz music, the beach. People tell us that we should do everything now, but call me naive, is it really that hard to still be together, alone, once kids come? I’m kind of bothered by this fatalistic attitude of “go on dates now because they’ll be your last”. Certainly there will be a period of time where things will feel on hold, but why do people act as if this baby will be a wedge between us?
The Lord spoke to me through someone the other day. “Have you ever thought that this baby might actually draw you and Ben CLOSER? You will share some sweet times with each other because of this baby, he will be a blessing and not a curse to your marriage.” I rest in those words from our sweet Lord and breathe a sigh of relief that there are good things coming. Different, but good.

Dog Tired
Two days ago, a friend of mine asked me and some other people, “What does it look like to be present with other people?” Lately, I’ve been super tired. Not that every minute has been like that. I’ve just been distracted. You know the kind of place where you are hanging out with friends and all you can think about is what you have to do later, or what you were just working on. Hmm, I’ll have to ponder this some more.
